Pre Natal Exhaustion
Growing a baby takes a lot of energy and so a pregnant mum-to-be must do everything she can to avoid exhaustion during her pregnancy. When your body is crying out for rest, don’t fight it but adjust your life accordingly. Here are some ways to help you do this:
• Reduce your list of daily activities down to the bare essentials.
• Stock up the fridge with ready made meals so that on those days when you don’t feel like cooking, you don’t have to.
• Turn down social invitations and cut out unnecessary commitments.
• If you are still working, find somewhere quiet (an empty conference room for example) where you can go and rest for half an hour or close your office door and put your head down on your desk and rest. Make the most of weekends to get plenty of rest and sleep. Some sort of rest or nap during the day is essential. See if you can cut back on your work hours or arrange to take work home over the weekend so you can leave earlier some days. Many working mums-to-be find it a great help to lie down for 20 minutes as soon as they get home from work as they then have more energy for the evening.
• Heed your body’s signals and start going to bed earlier than usual each night even if it means leaving the dinner dishes until the next day.
• The quality of your sleep can affect how you feel. Do whatever it takes to make your sleep more restful whether it is extra pillows, darker curtains or even earplugs. If you suffer from insomnia, then read for a while until you feel sleepy again.
• Try to do more difficult tasks when you have the most energy and leave those easier ones for when you are tired. Give yourself more time to do things and cut down on the multi-tasking for now. You will just get frustrated.
• If friends or family offer help or assistance, take advantage of this.
• If you are a stay-at-home mother with older children then arrange to leave your children with someone else from time to time so that you can catch up on some sleep.
• Your diet is very important at this time. You will need about 300 extra calories per day unless you started your pregnancy being overweight. So a healthy diet made up of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, skin milk and lean meats can help you to feel more energetic. Snack on healthy foods like fruit and yoghurt. If you eat junk food, this will actually sap you of energy and you will feel even more tired.
• Cut back on the caffeine and make sure you are drinking plenty of water – 8 glasses per day is best.
• Try and get some moderate exercise every day. A regular short walk up to 30 minutes will actually make you feel better, will help keep your muscles limber and give you a better night’s sleep. Stop for a break several times during the day in order to stretch and breathe deeply. Swimming is especially healthy for pregnant women.
It is hard work making a baby and you need to do everything you can to make your pregnancy as comfortable as possible.
