Natural Childbirth For A Healthier Baby
Giving birth is one of the most memorable moments for the soon to be mother. It’s a bittersweet event that will change her life forever. Unfortunately, nowadays having children is not what it used to be. Apart from the costs, mothers are now opting for natural childbirth to have a healthier baby.
Natural childbirth became prevalent in the 60’s and 70’s. Through the development of technology and science, medical interventions had been created to help the mother deliver her child.
Anesthetics were used to relieve labor pain. Drugs such as Oxytocin induce contractions to help the mother in delivery. Forceps or vacuum extraction is used to help pull the baby out of the birth canal. Cesarean section is a major surgery done so that mothers with complications or compromised health condition can deliver the baby. It is also used by figure conscious mothers to maintain there form before pregnancy.
These methods can be useful for the mother and the child. They are also essential in high risk pregnancy which prevents the mother from doing a vaginal delivery. Unfortunately some of these medical interventions have a side effect on the baby.
Forceps can cause a mark on the baby’s head which he/she will carry until adulthood. Vacuum extraction can also cause subgaleal hemorrhage which is fatal. Cesarean section is a major surgery which has its post-operational discomforts. Recovery will take a long period of time. Don’t forget the added cost for the operation among other expenses.
Due to this other women choose to have a natural childbirth. Natural childbirth eliminates the use of medical intervention. Although this may sound very difficult to others because of the absence of anesthetics, some consider it a better way to deliver a healthier baby.
Giving birth, the natural way
During natural childbirth the mother will be fully awake and alert. Without the use of anesthetics the mother will have full control of her delivery. They will also be able to move freely during and after childbirth. She can choose to walk (which is actually needed while in labor) or go to the bathroom. She can recover without lying flat on bed for hours to avoid a headache.
Other than the conventional lithotomy in childbirth, the mother can use other positions to facilitate delivery using her contractions and gravity. The mother doesn’t have to lie on her back which can be uncomfortable during delivery.
Mothers don’t have to be forced to push the baby out. Since they are fully alert and awake, their body reflexes will help them to push the baby faster. Studies show that having an epidural may prolong the pushing time during delivery.
The baby will be fully alert and awake when he/she is finally delivered outside her/his mother’s womb. Due to this the baby will have better pre-breastfeeding behaviors. This includes sucking and massaging of the mother’s breasts.
Mothers will also have a faster recovery period. They don’t have to wait until the anesthetics to wear off. They don’t have to recover from a major abdominal surgery. Natural childbirth can also be done at home with the assistance of a midwife and a doula.
Natural childbirth is also less expensive and more practical than medication assisted childbirth. Having a cesarean section can be expensive. It also presents complications for the mother on her next pregnancy. Apart from the scar, a mother’s uterine wall becomes weaker. The uterus may rupture which is fatal for the mother and the child.
Mothers feel a sense of empowerment after a natural childbirth. In most cases after a mother has gone through a natural childbirth they choose to do it for the rest of their pregnancies.
The main issue between natural childbirth and medication assisted delivery is pain. Natural childbirth also has its own ways of reducing pain for the mother as much as possible. However they do not guarantee the total relief from pain.
Natural childbirth lies in the prerogative of the mother and her partner. Both medication assisted delivery and natural childbirth can deliver a healthy child. The mother should be completely aware of the process of natural childbirth before she makes a decision. Not all mothers are qualified for natural childbirth. In some cases a medical intervention is needed to deliver a healthier baby.
