Uk Driving Days
Just another mile of cones on the motorway, just another country road with a caravan in ‘holiday mode’ - does this sound like your driving life. Every year sees more vehicles on the roads (the Society of Motor Manufacturers states an increase of 1.6% over last year in new car production alone). Even though the road tax is increasing under the pretense of environmental issues, we are not making any real dent into the miles of road available for all these cars. We all dream about the open road or nipping over to Germany for a quick blast on the autobahns, but what realistically can we do about it.
Over the past few years the growth in Driving Days in the UK has been clear. With the chance of a real sports car to drive and no limits (apart from your own), drivers from all over the country have been flocking to racetracks and disused aerodromes. These days can start from as little as £ 100 and give you that all our high octane experience.
Most of the major racing circuits in the UK now host driving days, including some of the premium circuits in the UK like Silverstone, Donington Park, Castle Combe and Rockingham. How does racing around the same circuit Michael Schumacher or even Lewis Hamilton grab you? Well with these driving days this is possible.
So what’s involved? Generally these days start early with a safety briefing. This will cover the dos and don’ts of the circuit, covering things like the flags colours, racing lines and braking distances. Generally for beginners the track will have the braking zones marked, along with turning in points and apex points. This will help you determine when to apply the breaks, when to start turning and where to aim for during the turn.
These days are then usually broken into sessions that allow you to drive different cars. It is usual to start on a conventional sports car or souped up hatchback. This will help you find your way around the circuit and practise some of the lessons shown at the briefing. Later on in the day the tempo will move up to proper performance cars and in some cases out and out racing cars. For beginners there is usually some form of tuition available, mostly in car. This will again help you get the most out of the car for the track.
So what are you waiting for, trust me once you have done it you will be hooked!
