Procrastination - How To Straighten Up And Fly Right- Simple Tips To Beat Procrastination
How many days are on the calendar? Take a look. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. There are only seven.
Do you see “Someday” on there?
This is how my mentor, Jeff Herring talks about procrastination. He encourages everyone to put off procrastination for now and get the task or job done. It is easier said than done.
It happens so often for some of us it is amazing that we ever get things done. For example, when do you get your taxes done? I don’t know about you but I can get so many other things done that are on the To Do List when I have a major project to complete or something that I do not really want to do. I’d rather clean out the junk room than write a paper sometimes. Now mind you the junk room is no little task. Why is it that it is in our nature to keep putting it off?
Recently while I was sailing, I noticed an osprey nest with large size babies in it with their mother in attendance. The babies were flapping their wings. This means that soon they will be leaving the nest and flying. If they don’t do it on their own, they will be in for a rude awakening as birds get pushed out of the nest when the mother thinks they are ready to fly.
Most of us are ready to fly now. We just need to exercise our mental muscles like the birds are exercising their wings.
Here are some pointers:
· See yourself with the goal completed-visualize what it is and keep it in front of you. Make a vision board, poster, or drawing
· Plan your work and work the plan - Make a 6 item to do list and prioritize it. Start with the most important thing first and don’t go to the next thing until you are done the first. Just keep doing the next thing
· Take breaks if you need to - Refresh yourself with a glass of water, nutritious snack, wash your face, play with your dog or take a short walk
· Have an accountability coach
· Reward yourself at increments or when you have competed the project - make it fun!
If you get too far off the track, acknowledge yourself for where you are and look at what is happening. Sometimes you need to cut back on the distractions in a creative way.
Start flapping your wings and take the leap before you find yourself getting pushed out by someone or something bigger than you!
