My Experience In A Detox
Why did you end up in a detox?
About six months prior to my visit in detox I had been sober for a couple of months. At that time I relapsed and went on the six month run leading up to my detox stay. During that six month run I was using excessive amounts of methamphetamine, prescription pills, and alcohol. I was also occasionally using cocaine and ecstasy. I couldn’t stop getting loaded on my own so I had to go to detox.
How long did you stay in detox?
That particular detox was a mandatory 5-7 day stay. I stayed in the detox the full 7 days.
What kind of withdraw symptoms did you experience?
Since I was mainly using methamphetamine before I went into detox, most of my withdraw symptoms were psychological. I experienced a lot of mental obsession, paranoia, and audio and visual hallucinations. I also experienced extreme lethargy and had a very hard time staying awake for any extended period of time. I also had a lot of aches and pains throughout my entire body.
What was your overall experience like in detox?
In all honesty, I didn’t know what to expect before I went into detox. I was frightened. However, once I was there for a few hours I felt very comfortable. It was really refreshing to be around people who understood what I was going through. It seemed as if they knew exactly what to say and when to say it. Aside from my actual detox, the rest of the stay was as comfortable as I could have asked for, I guess. I would not want to do it again though.
Are you happy that you made the decision to go to detox?
Yes! I must admit that it was not my idea to go to detox. I had some encouragement from my mom, a doctor, and a police officer; however, I did ultimately make the decision to go. Anyways, my life has changed exponentially since going to detox. During those 7 days I was able to see all of the damage I had been doing to myself and how I was hurting the people who loved me. I was also able to feel the emotional pain that I had created for myself in the past years of drug and alcohol addiction. If I had not had time to feel that pain, I would not be sober today.
What would be your suggestion to anyone who wants to quit drinking or doing drugs?
Let go of your fear! Go to detox and follow the suggestions of the people there. They can help you. They will also set you up with people to help you recover once you get out of detox.
