Loving All Phases - Strategies For Accepting The Changes Through Aging

Too often, much of what is being communicated by our elderly parents and friends is overlooked or dismissed. Many a chasm has been created in relationships because someone fails to understand another, and this later phase of life is no exception.

Having spent time coaching nurses in nursing homes, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with the residents of these homes who are in the latter stages of their earthly existence. What I’ve discovered has surprised and delighted me, as well as assisted me in navigating this unfamiliar terrain within my own family.

What Do I Do Now?

We find ourselves looking in on the waiting area of a hospital ward. A father is speaking to his children. He is telling them the sad news that their mother has just died. He is anxious and upset and has great difficulty with the words. The children, three of them, are looking at him in total bewilderment. Angela, the eldest, is sixteen years old. Anthony is the youngest; he is twelve years old. And Monica, she is the middle child, just turned fourteen.

Honesty In Marriage

Humans are not particularly honest creatures. We pretend we are, but really in the end, when we pile up all the individual little “I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings” lies, we aren’t brazenly honest at all. Is this a bad thing? Is being honest with your spouse 100% of the time a really good idea? Aren’t there times when we shouldn’t spill our guts, not even to our spouse? Or should we pride ourselves on being completely honest all the time no matter what? Unfortunately, honesty isn’t as black and white of a topic as it should be.

Giving Up Everything Gives You The One Thing You Can Never Buy - Peace

Oftentimes the only way to get what you really need is to give up what you already have.

It doesn’t seem to make sense but it’s true. This is a particularly difficult concept to pull off in such a materialistic world because our society uses money and material wealth as a measure of our value as people.
